SLEEP IS THE COUSIN OF DEATH EXHIBITION
Peak Street Magazine was basically born out of borderline insomnia. So it was only right that our unofficial motto, stolen straight from Nas’ rhyme book, became the theme for the first group exhibition we curated.
With the help of Adidas and Sharpie we hit up our favourite 50 Australian graf writers, illustrators, designers and other assorted art delinquents, gave them Nas’ lyric to be inspired by and asked them to utilise two old 12 inch vinyl records as their canvasses.
Fittingly we launched the group show down at Per Square Metre Gallery in Collingwood on Halloween and turned the place out.
Through a lot of hustle from myself the exhibition gained a lot of exposure online through sites like Design Federation, Australian Edge, The Vine as well as through radio with interviews on PBS and Triple R. The opening night was the biggest the gallery had ever seen, nearly three quarters of the artwork sold and I only got 2 of my own free beers.
